Personality:

- Pride: If Cullen has a fatal flaw, it is pride. Pride in himself, in his accomplishments, in the causes he supports, in his country, in his loyalties... Cullen has spent much of his life defining himself by his titles and his position in the Templar order. He wanted to join the Templars from his youth, and did so, albeit later than most, and took it upon himself to be the Best, with absolutely single-minded fervor. He believed in the cause, in the purpose of the Templars, even when the order began to lose sight of its true calling. Still he clung to his ideals, his sense of self, even as the world started crumbling around him. But when he reached his highest rank among the Templars, Knight-Commander, it was because of absolute catastrophe. He abandoned the order for a new cause, for the Inquisition, when Cassandra recruited him because he saw it as yet another chance to redeem himself, to have pride in himself and to do the most that he could.

- Self-loathing: It is Cullen's death-grip on his pride that contributes largely to his self-loathing tendencies, never allowing himself to completely let go of past mistakes, even as he continues to grow and improve. He does his best, always and ever, at first because it is the right thing to do and he doesn't know how else to be, but also because he feels as though he has to continually make up for his failures in the past, and his weaknesses. He feels weak for his prior dependence on lyrium (and for the withdrawals he suffered long-term when quitting it, that could have killed him), even as it was a required supplement as a Templar, he feels weak for the torture he endured by demons that led him to demand that so many survivors and victims themselves be killed (they were not killed), he feels weak for blindly following a deranged leader out of duty to an ideal that had long since tarnished. He has so much to make up for, and while he has come a long way and most definitely has pride in the man he is now, he still remembers the man he was, and he clings to that past life in what he thinks is penitence. This also manifests as Anger for Cullen, in sharp words and physical action. He can be very easily frustrated at times, with all of this simmering below the surface at all times.

+/- Single-mindedness: This can be both a positive and a negative. It is a positive in that it means he can focus on the task at hand and complete it, achieve it, defeat it, effectively and with his full attention. It also means that he has a tendency to potentially under-think things, to become frustrated when a roundabout route must be taken and he can't simply hammer his way through as a solution. He is a man of action, and of very little sleep, who is most in his element when he is in the midst of battle, where his instincts can lead him. He is a formidable strategist, tactician, and commander of armies, and of whatever else he chooses to put his mind to, but also at the detriment of his relationships with his family and others, as his attention has been so long on his Duty that he has neglected to spend time or focus on people.

+/- Guarded: as a result of all of the above, Cullen can be very guarded. He doesn't open up to anyone easily, or at all, most likely. His personal life, what there is of it, is very private to him, and he prefers to focus on work at all times, to the point that he even neglects to write his family to inform them of his survival, or movements, or any news at all. He isn't cold, or unfeeling, or even opposed to friendships and relationships, but he has a very difficult time letting down his armor to show exactly how much of a mess he is inside. When dealing with the serious withdrawals from his choice to stop taking lyrium, he only tells one of his companions, who in turn has to tell the Inquisitor to confront him about it, and eventually to offer support. In a way, it might be Cullen's attempt to keep from letting down anyone else he cares about, if he doesn't let anyone else get that close and continues to focus on a Cause instead of anything personal. Of course, he is absolutely capable of caring deeply about others, romantically and platonically and familially, but it takes some effort on the part of the other party. Only recently, in the past few years, has Cullen truly come to terms with how he once viewed mages as lesser, as merely vessels of potential demon possession to be confined for their own good, and this is just another example of how he has compartmentalized the world around him in an attempt to guard himself.

Above all, Cullen is committed to doing the right thing, the good thing, to protecting those in need, and defeating the evils of the world that threaten these things. He would gladly give his life in service to these causes. Though he is often resistant to those seeking friendship and companionship with him at first, these are things he absolutely desires, and is shown to enjoy simply spending time with those who have become his friends, whether chess matches or losing spectacularly at a game of cards that his pride would absolutely not let him back down from. There is a good heart in this man, but it's often hidden behind the layers of his armor he's constructed for himself.

Powers and Abilities:

Templar Training: He is a skilled warrior, proficient with a two-hand sword, or a sword and shield, as well as hand-to-hand combat. He has many other skills learned specifically by a templar that were reliant on his former use of lyrium, that he no longer has quite as much strength with, but the knowledge remains. As it stands, he is still a formidable warrior even without his anti-magic capabilities.

Strategic Thinking: he's a military commander, commander of the Inquisition's forces at most recent, and an excellent chess player, at that.
